Meet The Artists

Nathalie Boisvert

Playwright

Nathalie Boisvert holds an M.A. in Dramatic Arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal, and is the author of both poetry and theatre. Her fifteen plays include L’histoire sordide de Conrad B. (produced in Belgium and France) and L’été des Martiens (produced in Quebec, Toronto, France and Belgium, as well as in two different German translations in Dusseldorf and Berlin).  Her work has received several major awards: the Prix Journées de Lyon des auteurs du théâtre for her play Vie et mort d’un village in 2006, and the Prix Gratien-Gélinas for Buffet chinois, produced at Espace Go in Montreal in 2010. Her latest work, Antigone au printemps (Antigone in the Spring), won the Prix Émilie Augier from the Académie Française and was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for Theatre in French.

Johanna Nutter

Translator

Johanna Nutter (she, they) is a Montreal-based performance maker and facilitator devoted to authentic storytelling. Her award-winning work has toured bilingually across Canada and Internationally. In 2016, she formed creature/creature, consolidating her passion for negotiating the delicate spaces between people, subjectivities, and artistic practices. Nutter is also devoted to advancing creative, active pedagogy, producing interactive educational programming in various African countries.

Kate Twa

Reader

Kate began her professional acting career at 17 with the role Estella in The Citadel Theatre’s production of Great Expectations. Shortly after, she travelled overseas to study in London with the British Theatre Association. Training in the classics by day left her evenings open to explore some of London’s newest playwrights and explosive productions. By 18, she was developing a taste for the raw, insightful, and provocative work she is known for today.

Selected stage performances include Birdbath by Leonard Melfi, No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre, Miss Julie by August Strindberg, and The Sweetest Swing in Baseball by Diana Son. Kate has acted extensively in film and television (The X-Files, The Outer Limits, Killer App, Da Vinci’s Inquest, and The Dead Zone).

Kate has taught thousands of actors in the craft of acting, is a co-founder of Railtown Actors’ Studio in Vancouver, and is currently Artistic Director of Tempest Theatre and Film Society in Penticton.

뮤지컬 <R;LINK> The Musical is an international emerging artist co-creation Inspired by the true-life hockey games played by Canadian soldiers on the frozen Imjin River and the events of The Battle of Kapyong during the Korean War. Over a period of three months, recent graduates and emerging artists of both countries embarked on a truly transformative journey as part of the “2024-2025 Korea-Canada Year of Mutual Cultural Exchange”.

About the playwright & director

김가람 Kim Ga-ram

The initial concept for the work originated from Kim Ga-ram’s research into the Korean War and the pivotal Battle of Kapyong, where she learned of Canadian soldiers playing ice hockey on the Imjin River. This image inspired use ice hockey as a metaphor to portray the brutality of war while celebrating the enduring youth, dreams, and humanity of the young men who fought. Her directorial vision emphasized cross-cultural unity.

Tyrone Perreault
(Cowessess First Nation)

뮤지컬 <R;LINK> The Musical” marks his debut in theatrical writing. His creative focus was on ensuring a proper representation of Canada’s diverse cultural fabric, including not only English and French-Canadian elements, but crucially, the voices and presence of Indigenous peoples. His experience included his first trip to Korea, where he was deeply moved by visiting the Canadian War Memorial in Kapyong and witnessing Korean elders pay their respects to the fallen soldiers.

Sandrine Boudrias

A recent graduate of the CapU Musical Theatre Program, Quebec native Sandrine Boudrias has an intimate and unique understanding of the dramatic text, having originated the role of Lt Tremblay. Her direct insight is invaluable, especially concerning the French-Canadian content—much of which was developed with her—as she navigates the material’s linguistic and cultural nuances. This project prioritizes supporting emerging talents like Sandrine in this key role, which is vital for ensuring the French translation maintains artistic quality, cultural integrity, and co-creation.

About the playwright

Chris Dodd

Chris Dodd is an award-winning Edmonton-based Deaf performing artist, playwright, and accessibility advocate. Over a 25-year career, he founded and serves as artistic director for SOUND OFF, Canada’s national theatre festival dedicated to Deaf performing arts, working to dismantle barriers for Deaf artists. His critically acclaimed solo show, Deafy, has toured widely and been published by Playwrights Canada Press in the anthology Interdependent Magic: Disability Performance in Canada. A tireless advocate, he has consulted on accessibility and previously worked as an Adaptive Technologist at the University of Alberta. His significant contributions have been recognized with honors including the 2019 Guy Laliberté Prize and an appointment to the Order of Canada in 2025.

Martin Bellemare

A graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada’s playwriting program, Martin Bellemare was awarded the 2009 Prix Gratien-Gélinas for Le Chant de Georges Boivin. He received creative assistance grants from CNT/ARTCENA for La Liberté, Moule Robert (Bourse CNL, shortlisted for the 2017 Prix de la dramaturgie francophone de la Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques [SACD], 2018 Prix Michel-Tremblay), for Maître Karim la perdrix (2018 SACD Prix de la dramaturgie francophone), and for his play for young audiences Charlie et le Djingpouite (shortlisted for the 2020 Prix Louise Lahaye). He has led workshops and attended writing residencies in West Africa, Quebec and Europe, including Poland, where he wrote three short plays for the DramEducation Francophone project “10 sur 10.” He was a finalist for the 2020 Siminovitch Prize, which celebrates excellence and innovation in contemporary Canadian theatre. His play Cœur minéral won the 2020 Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama. His plays are read and performed in West Africa, Canada, and Europe, and are published by Dramaturges Éditeurs and Lansman.

A title that already holds a world within it.
A workshop exploring the threshold between word and gesture, language and silence.

The journey was born from the desire to create the Italian for the stage — to let the words of Trina Davies’ play Silence come alive in their Italian version, reshaped for performance.  This laboratory weaves together new translation development, expressive reading, active translation, and direction and concept exploration –  deepening the themes of non-verbal communication and linguistic inclusion.

SYNOPSIS
It only takes one spark of love to change the world forever. Mabel Hubbard Bell was a strong, self-assured woman—bright, passionate, and a complete original. Despite a near-fatal case of childhood scarlet fever that cost her the ability to hear, she learned to talk and lip-read in multiple languages. At nineteen, she married a young inventor named Alexander Graham Bell and became the most significant influence in his life. Mabel’s unique perspective on her remarkable life, and beautiful and true love story about how we communicate.

Meet the Translation Team

Trina Davies | Playwright (Canada)

Trina Davies is a playwright based in Vancouver BC Canada. Trina’s award-winning plays include Shatter, Multi User Dungeon, The Auction, The Bone Bridge and Waxworks. Her play The Romeo Initiative was a finalist for Canada’s top literary prize the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama 2012 and was the winner of the National Enbridge Prize for Established Artist. Her plays have been performed across Canada and in a number of other countries including the United States, Germany, Italy, and India. Her work has been translated into Italian and German. She has participated in artist residencies at the Stratford Festival in Ontario, Banff Centre for the Arts, the Playwrights Theatre Centre and the Bella Vita Playwrights Retreat in Italy. She is currently working towards the world premiere of her play Grand Ghosts in the Fall of 2022. Grand Ghosts is a large-scale piece about the mysterious disappearance of theatre tycoon Ambrose Small directed by Siminovitch Prize-winning director Jillian Keiley for The Grand London. Carolina Migli | Translator (Italy)

Carolina Migli is a Writer, Director, Actor and Translator. She studied ballet at the Accademia Domenichino da Piacenza (Italy), acting at the Gaiety school of acting (Ireland) & the TEATRODUE National Theatre in Parma (Itlay). She has worked with the Europa Theatre Festival, The Verona Shakespearean Festival, Viterbo’s Festival and the Summer Solstice festival. worked in London, France, Spain, Hungary, Denmark and was assistant director to Tim Stark (Royal National Theatre) for four years.

She is also the artistic director of ChezActors with a company of 25 professional theatre artists, and the Associate responsible for International Outreach at Teatro Trieste 34. Currently, she collaborates with Noveteatro theatre company in Northern Italy, ChezArt circle of artists, ICON women artist group and Coming Out Association. Translations include: Victor Lodato’s The bread of winter & Motherhouse, Peter Gill’s Small change, and Philip St.John’s The Sylvias.

With his three friends, all older than he, he sets out on road trip from Québec to Vancouver, in search of a first love whom he hasn’t seen in 50 years. A play about love in all it’s various forms.

Director/ Translator Notes

It is no secret that older artists might face age-related physical and cognitive changes. However, far greater impediments to their successful participation in the arts are the social stigmas of ageism and ableism.

On this project, we explored forms and aesthetics specifically from tools to support Senior artists in performance in rural touring. By “bringing the production to the performer”, we asked “what new is created when we make access integral to creation, design, rehearsal, and presentation processes?” And by doing so – draw attention to the needs of our ageing population in an intergenerational conversation and illuminate the experience of seniors’ day to day living.

The Creatus Project “Bakes Access & Accommodation into Creation”. This is done by identifying the barriers and needs of the senior performer creatively and structurally, addressing these barriers, and then integrating the solutions into all aspects of production.

Reimaging the production to elder actor Allan Toots, we decentralised memory from product, added memory prompts developed with Al (ex. set, props, sound cues, media, etc.), and created new text and staging to meet his accommodation. This “Artist First Approach” means each show is unique the unique performer.

Still life is a brilliant study of a writer struggling with general anxiety disorder. Severely shaken by a panic attack on her birthday, she is bewildered as to the cause–she seems afraid of fear itself and becomes a shut-in! Alarmed by her retreat from society, her family and friends gather at her door to coax her out.

A candid look at anxiety, this feminist play criticizes performance-oriented culture. Still life illustrates how society responds when one falls short of the accomplishments expected at life’s first major milestone. It proposes that art can heal the past and provide hope for the future.

About the playwrights

Marie-Ève Milot & Marie-Claude St-Laurent are the Artistic Directors of Théâtre de l’Affamée. Mandated to invest in a (re) new Feminist/feminine theatre, they create complex characters that can be identified outside the binary mode of gender, question normativity and provoke new possibilities. Active members of Femmes pour l’Équité en Théâtre (F.E.T.), they co-wrote the Jeu magazine cry t action, addressing the under-representation of women in theatre, and created reference documents for students and faculty about the under-representation of women and the systems that marginalize them. They have written 8 works together including Cour à scrap – Portrait d’une famille reconstituée, Débranchée (Unplugged) (shortlisted for the prix Louise-LaHaye 2017) and Guérilla de l’ordinaire, (shortlisted for the prix Michel-Tremblay 2020). Since graduating l’École de théâtre du Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe, Marie-Eve Milot has been deeply involved in the theatre world. As an actress, she has collaborated with Hugo Bélanger (Princess Turandot, Pinocchio, Peter et Alice), Marc Beaupré (Ce samedi il pleuvait), Serge Denoncourt (Thérèse et Pierrette à l’École des Saints-Anges), Geneviève L. Blais (Si les oiseaux, Local B-1717) and Sébastien David Scratch. She was seen le Petit Théâtre de La Colline in Paris, in Les barbelés by Annick Lefebvre, staged by Alexia Boerger, and then remounted the show at the Théâtre de Quat’Sous. She can be seen on large and small screen (Les pays d’en haut, 5e rang).

Marie-Claude St-Laurent

(Elle)

Marie-Claude St-Laurent is an actor, author, feminist activist, co-editor of La Nef aux Éditions du remue-ménage. On the small screen, she was seen in the popular youth show Vrak La vie and is more recently as a cast member in L’écrivain public III and des Sioui-Bacon V. On stage, she produced Guérilla de l’ordinaire, Chienne(s), Toc Toc, Grease and Aller chercher demain. A member of the steering committee of Espace Go, and collaborated in the research study conducted by the RéQEF.

Rhiannon Collett

Rhiannon Collett (they/them) is an award-winning non-binary playwright, performer, director and translator based in Vancouver. They are interested in interdisciplinary creation processes, sexual labour, gender performativity and science fiction. Their works include Miranda & Dave Begin Again, Wasp, Tragic Queens, and The Kissing Game, an urban fantasy revenge drama that explores love, betrayal, friendship and identity commissioned by Youtheatre (Montreal) and Young People’s Theatre (Toronto). It won the Montreal English Theatre Award for Outstanding New Text.

Rhiannon’s work has been presented internationally at the LungA festival in Seyðisfjörður, Iceland, and at the Festival les Petites Formes in Fort-de-France, Martinique.
